  The Alzheimer’s Research UK Drug Discovery Institute (ARUK UCL DDI), located at University College London (UCL), has the goal of finding new therapies for neurodegenerative disease. As part of the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology it is integrated into the world-renowned UCL Neuroscience community and closely aligned with the Dementia Research Institute at UCL. Academic scientists supporting the activities of the ARUK UCL DDI are Institute of Neurology Professors Giampietro Schiavo, John Hardy and Bart de Strooper.

  Two positions are available as part of this novel and exciting initiative. You will take a leading role in the neurodegenerative disease modelling and target validation activities of the Institute. You will use your molecular and cellular neurobiology skills to develop and utilise cell based and ex-vivo models to characterise and validate new therapeutic approaches for dementia. As projects mature, there will be the opportunity to use mouse models of neurodegenerative disease. The post holders will forge close collaborations with scientists at UCL, and beyond, to identify and validate novel therapeutic targets, and ensure their subsequent progress towards the development of new therapeutics.

  Applicants must have a PhD in an aspect of molecular and cellular neurobiology. The successful candidate must have experience in a breadth of molecular, cellular and imaging techniques as well as good inter-personal skills with an ability to work co-operatively in a multidisciplinary setting. Ability to maintain high standards of technical excellence and experimental reproducibility is also required. Experience in synapse biology, or in glial biology (astrocyte or microglia) would be desirable.

  Posts are available immediately and are funded by a grant from ARUK until 31 August 2020 in the first instance. Salary will be in the range of £35,328 – £42,701 per annum including London Allowance on the UCL Grade 7 scale, superannuable.

  Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at research assistant Grade 6B (salary £30,922 – £32,607 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis. If the PhD has not yet been granted, the final accepted version of the thesis must have been submitted to the degree-granting university by the start date.
